İstanbul'un simgelerinden olan eserin tarihi, efsanelerden ayıklanamamaktadır.
Türkiye'de yaygın olan efsaneye göre, devrin yöneticisi, rüyasında, çok sevdiği kızını yılan sokması sonucu kaybettiğini görür. Denizin ortasında bir kule yaptırır ve kızını kuleye kapatır. Ne var ki, kızına yolladığı üzüm sepetinin içine sızan yılan, güzel prensesin ölümüne neden olur.
Bugüne ulaşan kule, 1719’da Nevşehirli İbrahim Paşa tarafından yaptırılan taş kuledir.
Harem ve Salacak kıyıları arasında, kıyıya 180 metre mesafedeki kayalar üzerinde yer alan taş kuledeki fenerde, 3 saniyede bir, 4 mil uzaktan görünen kırmızı bir ışık yanı sönmektedir. Kız Kulesi, bugün motor ve kayıklarla ulaşılan bir restoran olarak kullanılmaktadır.

As one of the symbols of Istanbul, the history of the Maiden’s Tower (known in English also as Leander’s Tower), cannot be separated from legend. According to the most widely-known story in Turkey, the ruler of that time dreamt that his beloved daughter was fatally bitten by a snake. In order to protect his daughter, he had a tower built in the middle of the sea and sent her to live there. However, a snake hidden in a basket of grapes sent by the ruler bit the princess who died as a result.
The present-day tower was built out of stone in 1719 by Ibrahim Pasha of Nevşehir.

The tower, which is located on a small rocky island 180 meters from the shore between Harem and Salacak, has a red light which flashes once every three seconds and can be seen four miles away. Nowadays, there is a restaurant in the tower. Boats transfer customers from the shore to the tower and back again.
